WHAT IS RESIN AND WHAT CAN I MAKE WITH IT?

We have two types of resins available; epoxy resin and water-based acrylic resin. Epoxy resin is a two-part system consisting of a liquid resin (part A) and a liquid hardener (part B). Both parts need to be mixed together in order for the resin to cure to a solid-state. It is colourless and transparent in nature but can also be easily coloured with a variety of pigments and additives to mimic many other types of materials. Its transformative characteristics make resin the most versatile material to work with.

Resin can be poured onto surfaces as a clear protective coating or to create colourful fluid resin art, or cast into moulds to form a shape or to embed items. It is commonly used to create art pieces, 3D figurines, jewellery, coasters, river tables and, more recently, to encase wedding flowers or pet fur for keepsakes.

Water-based acrylic resin (i.e. SmileStone™, Jesmonite) is a two-part system consisting of a gypsum plaster powder (base) and a liquid resin (activator). When mixed together, it has an opaque and stone-like appearance. Because of its raw and natural look, it is popularly used to create nostalgic terrazzo and marble patterns.

Both epoxy resin and water-based acrylic resin can be used together to create more unique and interesting designs.
